Skincare for Your Neck and Décolletage

One of the goals of aging gracefully is to look as though you have aged well. Protecting the delicate skin on your chest is vital to maintaining a youthful appearance. However, the neck and décolletage area are often neglected in skincare routines. Like your face, this area is prone to wrinkles and signs of premature aging. Dark spots, hyperpigmentation, dull, dry, and fine lines and wrinkles can all appear on your chest. As the skin is quite thin on this area, taking preventative measures now, will help ensure that you protect this area from the negative affects of aging.

Protect the neck and décolletage with these skincare tips

Wear Sunscreen

Given that this area is one that is exposed to the sun, wearing a high SPF sunscreen with consistent application protects the delicate skin from UV rays.

Exfoliate

Exfoliating your skin is necessary for the removal of dead skin cells. Over time, these dead skin cells accumulate causing the skin to look dull. Exfoliation not only removes the dead skin cells, but also prepares the skin for moisturizer.

Moisturize

When moisturizing your face and body, be sure and moisturize your neck and chest. Hydrated skin appears healthy and radiant. Consistent use of moisturizer plumps the skin and improves the overall appearance of the skin. Since the skin on this area is naturally thin, hydration is key to maintaining the youthful glow.

Chemical Peel

Chemical peels work wonders to exfoliate and reconstruct the skin. Once finished, the skin is smooth, rejuvenated, and will absorb moisture better. You’re left with a bright, illuminated décolletage. You can visit a spa or try an at-home chemical peel treatment. If I’m fixed for time and need a treatment, I opt for resurfacing pads. They re-texture the chest area and are gentle enough so that the skin is not irritated after use.

Consistency is Key

Developing a Skincare Routine

The most important part of protecting the neck and décolletage area is to develop and maintain a consistent routine. Without consistency, the skin does not have the opportunity to prevent or reverse any signs of aging. While products used on the face may be safe for your neck and chest, the skin is thinner so you want to be sure to start with a sensitive exfoliant and moisturizer. Being too abrasive when exfoliating can damage the tissue. Gentle, upward strokes are best at preventing skin tissue damage.

My favorite product to use daily is RoC Multicorrection. Since it contains SPF, I apply it before starting my day so that it protects and moisturizes my neck and chest area. For a simple, night routine,  exfoliate with Palmer’s Sugar Scrub and moisturize with Cetaphil or CeraVe lotion.

Skin is exposed to many elements throughout the day. Overtime these add up causing skin to loose it’s luster. Aging gracefully includes adopting a consistent skin care routine for your neck, chest, and décolletage. Just five minutes a day is all it takes!
